Storing nitrile gloves so the declared shelf life still means something
Shelf life is a tested figure, and it is conditional on storage. Store gloves outside the declared conditions and the compliance claim no longer covers them.
Shelf life on a glove carton is not an estimate of how long the gloves will physically survive. It is a declared, tested figure, and it is conditional. EN 455-4:2009 makes the condition explicit: gloves comply with the EN 455 series until the end of their stated shelf life provided they are stored in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Store them otherwise and the declaration no longer covers them.
That is the whole point of this article. Storage is not housekeeping. It is the condition on which the compliance claim rests.
What the standard requires of the manufacturer
Under EN 455-4 the manufacturer must determine shelf life by stability studies – real-time ageing, or accelerated ageing with real-time confirmation – and must state the storage conditions the figure depends on. Where a maximum storage temperature applies, it must appear in the labelling.
Our own examination gloves declare a five-year shelf life against these conditions:
Store in original packaging in a dry and dark place at room temperature. Protect from heat, humidity, bright light and ozone.
A declared five years is specific to that product and those conditions. It is not an industry average, and a glove is not "probably fine" beyond it – beyond the stated date there is no tested basis for the barrier claim, and no CE declaration covering it.
The four agents of degradation
Heat. Elevated temperature accelerates oxidative degradation of the polymer. This is precisely why accelerated ageing works as a test method: seven days at 70 °C under EN 455-2 stands in for real-time shelf life. A pallet stored against a warm wall is running that experiment unintentionally.
Ultraviolet light. Sunlight and, less obviously, fluorescent tubes emit UV that attacks the film. Cartons are opaque for a reason. Gloves decanted into open dispensers in a sunlit room are exposed.
Ozone. Ozone cracks elastomers at very low concentrations. Its sources in a warehouse are electrical: motors, generators, UV lamps, some air purifiers. Keep glove stock away from electrical plant.
Humidity. Moisture affects the packaging before the glove, weakening cartons and compromising the dispenser box that protects the film from light and handling.
Practical storage conditions
Stock rotation, and the date that matters
EN 455-2:2024 defines date of manufacture as the packaging date, and shelf life runs from it. So the figure to rotate on is printed on the carton, not the date the delivery arrived.
Run first-expired-first-out rather than first-in-first-out. On a framework agreement with staged call-offs the two are not the same, because a later delivery can carry an earlier manufacturing date.
For institutional stockholding, three practices catch most problems:
1. Record lot code and date of manufacture at goods-in, not just quantity. 2. Re-inspect any stock that has been held through a summer in an uncontrolled space. 3. Where stock has been stored outside the declared conditions, treat the shelf life as void rather than extended – there is no valid method for revising it upward after the fact.
A note on two claims we removed
An earlier version of this article stated that powder-free gloves have a shorter shelf life than powdered ones, and that gloves stored ideally have been known to last ten years. Neither is supported. Powdered medical gloves are no longer accepted in the EU or the US, making the comparison moot; and a ten-year figure has no testing behind it and directly undercuts the declared shelf life that the compliance claim depends on.
