Nitrile, latex or vinyl: choosing the right glove material

Three materials account for almost all single-use glove supply, and they are not interchangeable. What actually separates them, and what to specify.

Three materials account for almost all single-use glove supply: nitrile, natural rubber latex and vinyl. They are not interchangeable, and the differences that matter in an institutional setting are not the ones usually listed. Barrier integrity, allergy risk and chemical resistance decide the choice. Feel and price decide very little.

Nitrile

Nitrile is a synthetic rubber, specifically acrylonitrile butadiene rubber. It is the default material for clinical and laboratory examination gloves for three reasons: it carries no risk of Type I natural rubber latex allergy, it has the highest puncture resistance of the three, and its chemical resistance is broad enough to cover most routine handling.

Nitrile is fully impermeable to water. So are latex and vinyl. Any claim that one of these materials is less water-resistant than another describes a difference that does not exist – all three fail by tearing or puncturing, not by wetting through.

Two properties are worth specifying rather than assuming:

Modulus. A softer, low-modulus film reduces the force needed to keep the glove on the hand over a full shift.
Accelerator content. Nitrile is vulcanised with chemical accelerators, which are the leading cause of Type IV contact dermatitis from gloves. Accelerator-free formulations eliminate that route, and are not the same as gloves marketed as accelerator-free on the strength of an extraction test.

Food contact is a separate certification, not a property of the material. Check the declaration, not the box symbol.

Natural rubber latex

Latex remains the reference material for fit and tactile feedback, which is why it is still widely used for surgical gloves where fine manipulation matters more than anything else. Its elasticity is higher than nitrile's, and it recovers better after stretching.

The constraint is allergy. Natural rubber latex contains proteins that cause Type I hypersensitivity, which in the worst case is anaphylactic. This is why many hospitals have moved to latex-free environments entirely, and why EN 455-3 sets a limit on extractable protein.

Latex also performs poorly against organic solvents, and is not recommended for acidic foodstuffs.

Vinyl

Vinyl is polyvinyl chloride softened with plasticisers. It is the cheapest of the three and the weakest: lower puncture resistance, a looser fit, and a tendency for the film to separate at the fingertips under stress.

It has one genuine advantage – no latex proteins and generally fewer sensitising accelerators – and one legitimate use case: short, low-risk, non-clinical tasks where gloves are changed frequently. It is not a substitute for nitrile in a clinical setting.

What to specify

Material is the start of a specification, not the end of it. For institutional supply, name the material and then the evidence:

Standard and edition: EN 455-1:2020+A2:2024 for freedom from holes, EN 455-2:2024 for dimensions and strength.
AQL: 1.5 for examination gloves, 0.65 for surgical. See what AQL actually guarantees.
Chemical protection, where relevant: EN ISO 374 with the specific chemicals named.
Accelerator status: a declaration that no accelerators were used in compounding, if Type IV allergy is a concern.
Food contact, where relevant: the declaration under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and BfR XXI. See migration testing.
